Hear No Evil - Chapter 5

JHudson: Hey Sue, how was the spa?
SThomas: Hey Jack, the spa was great. I've never been so relaxed in my life. You guys should try it sometime.
JHudson: Happy to hear you enjoyed it, but somehow I don't think Myles and Bobby would be up for it. Then again, with Myles you never know.

Sue chuckled at Jack's words, imagining Bobby and Myles sitting round in white fluffy bathrobes while the beauty specialists carried out manicures and pedicures on them. She knew that Bobby would think it too girlie, but Jack had a point about Myles. Somehow, she thought that with his blue blood upbringing, he wouldn't mind a bit of pampering.

SThomas: So what have you been up to tonight?
JHudson: Not much really. I finally finished my report and played a few rounds of pool with Bobby.
SThomas: Did he let you win again?
JHudson: Very funny Thomas. Actually, I let him win, several times.
SThomas: That doesn't sound like you Jack, you hate to lose. Are you sure you're feeling alright? I don't need to send a doctor round do I?
JHudson: Yeah, I'm feeling fine. In fact, I realised that winning isn't everything. Sometimes you have to lose to realise what you have.

Sue sat back in her chair. What does he mean by that? Her fingers hovered above the keyboard, unsure how to respond. She thought that she knew what he meant. Since they had finished the undercover assignment, she had missed seeing him each evening. She had almost gotten used to seeing him before she went to bed, him being there when she had gotten up for breakfast. Whilst she hadn't lost Jack in the true sense of the word, she had lost seeing him in that environment. Could it be possible that he feels the same way?

JHudson: Sue, you still there?
SThomas: I'm still here Jack.
JHudson: Good, I thought you had left me there for a second.
SThomas: I would never leave you Jack.

Jack sat and looked between his screen and his keyboard. What does she mean by that? Surely she didn't mean what he hoped she meant. Their undercover assignment had made him realise just how deeply his feelings for her ran and after almost two years, he thought that it was about time that she knew as well. The trouble was, was he prepared to deal with the consequences if she didn't return his feelings? They had a strong friendship that was based on mutual respect. He wasn't sure if he was prepared to risk losing that friendship.

JHudson: Sue, can I ask you something?
SThomas: Of course you can Sparky, you don't need to ask.

Jack grinned at her use of his nickname. She had asked his permission to call him Sparky after they'd finished the undercover assignment. It was usually only Bobby that used it, but since Sue had found out, she'd occasionally called him by the name, usually when she was trying to get one over on him. If it was anyone else he probably would have said something about them using it, but he was incapable of refusing Sue anything. No matter how hard he'd tried, he had yet to come up with a nickname for her. A few had gone through his head but none that he thought suited her character. As his fingers hovered over the keyboard, he quickly typed his question before he bottled out.

JHudson: Do you have any plans for tomorrow?
SThomas: Well, seeing as I was meant to be undercover with you, no I haven't. Why?
JHudson: Because I would like to take you out for the day.

Sue was a little taken aback by his question. She checked over her shoulder to see if there was any sign of Lucy. She smiled when she saw the light coming from under the bathroom door and turned back to her computer screen.

SThomas: Why Jack Hudson, are you asking me out on a date?
JHudson: Yes Miss Thomas I am.

Sue read the words several times. She hadn't expected that response from him. They'd gone on days out several times, but never before had either of them had called them dates. She'd called it a date, expecting him to back track like he usually did. His confirmation of her question had surprised her more than she thought it would. Taking a few moments to ponder her response, she realised that there would only be one answer to his question.

SThomas: In that case I would love to go out with you tomorrow. Oh and Jack, can I ask you something now?
JHudson: Anything.
SThomas: What took you so long?

Jack smiled at her question and knew that it was rhetorical. It didn't need an answer and it was a question that he had asked himself so many times in the past. Now that he had, he couldn't wait for tomorrow to come.
