Hear No Evil - Chapter 10

As they waited for the ride to start, Sue was acutely aware about how close she was sitting to Jack. Their thighs touched in the close confines of their seats and she could feel the muscles of his leg through the denim of their jeans. She had sat close to him before but something about this was different. They were on a date. Suddenly every little touch made her nerves stand on end. Her senses went on high alert each time he threw her a smile or the occasional wink, the latter being guaranteed to send her into a pile of mush, something that she hoped she could control in front of him.

She had always enjoyed spending time with him. He knew how to make her laugh, to make her feel at ease and he always seemed to know when there was something bothering her. He also had a way of making her open up to him, even when she didn't feel like talking. With anyone else, she would just insist that she was fine and they would leave her alone, but not Jack. He refused to move until she told him what was on her mind.

She glanced across at him and admired his profile. He really was a handsome man. She would be lying if she said she hadn't noticed it before. As soon as she laid eyes on him on her first day she had seen it. His dark eyes were so expressive. He didn't have to tell her how he was feeling, all she had to do was look into those eyes and she could tell. He'd never been able to hide his feelings behind those eyes, no matter how much he tried, they betrayed him every time.

She smiled when he turned to look at her, then she saw something in his eyes that she didn't quite recognise. As she looked at him, she shot him a questioning glance and then she glanced down at his hands, seeing them balled into tight fists. She lifted her eyes to his, realising what it was. Fear. Jack Hudson was scared.
